Sanctuary (& Future Youth/Children’s) Choir Director

Position Description (Revised August 2019)

Reports to: Pastor

FTE: 0.20 - 0.25 FTE (8 - 10 hours/week)


  • Committed follower of Jesus Christ willing to abide in and support the identity and values of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and St. Philip’s Lutheran Church
  • B.A./B.S./B.F.A. degree relating to music or equivalent work experience
  • Previous work/ministry experience directing a Sanctuary Choir
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to take direction, work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
  • Ability to use necessary office equipment
  • Ability to work independently with multiple interruptions
  • Ability to work with confidential information in a conscientious and responsible manner
  • Self-motivated with ability to see tasks and projects through from start to finish
  • Effective customer service skills and an ability to interact confidently with people in a professional manner
  • Requires long periods of sitting. Stooping, lifting, and standing may also be required
  • Ability to anticipate needs and plan accordingly
  • Ability to trouble-shoot and problem-solve minor issues with office equipment, computer hardware or software
  • Ability to work with volunteers
  • Ability to pass required background and agency checks
  • Understanding and compliance with copyright laws

Primary Responsibilities - Sanctuary Choir:

  • General Responsibilities and Expectations
    • Conduct the Sanctuary Choir during Sunday worship services
    • Using knowledge of the liturgical year, select music for the choir to sing each Sunday
      • Rehearse choir for 1.5 hours every week (Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30pm in the balcony)
  • Organize and contact members of Sanctuary Choir and other musical groups
  • Participate in other worship experiences as needed
  • Participate as a member of the Worship Planning team
  • Oversee Sanctuary Choir budget and submit annual request for upcoming year
  • Communicate weekly music slides for worship projection
  • Organize and file music in storage room
  • Provide spiritual leadership to choir

Primary Responsibilities – Future Youth/Children’s Choir:

  • General Responsibilities and Expectations
    • Rehearse the Youth/Children’s Choir as appropriate for performances
    • Select and order age appropriate music which offers a teaching experience
    • Set Youth/Children’s choir schedules
    • Supervise setups as appropriate/needed for Youth/Children’s Choir performances
    • Conduct Youth/Children’s Choir during appropriate worship services and concerts
    • Organize and contact members of the Youth/Children’s Choirs
    • Organize and contact volunteers as needed
    • Participate in special services/events/music as directed by Senior Pastor
    • Organize accompaniment as needed
    • Participate as a member of the worship planning team

Cross-Program Performance Expectations:

  • Planning & Program Management
    • Ensure all choir music and activities are aligned with the doctrine, values, and mission of the ELCA and St. Philip’s Lutheran Church.
    • Develop a stakeholder evaluation of effectiveness/satisfaction submitted yearly to the Pastor
    • Plan and execute Christmas concert
    • Plan and execute Good Friday and other holidays
    • Strive for continuous improvement
    • Communication
      • Establish and maintain consistent and comprehensive communication with pastoral, music (worship band, bell choir, organist), and other staff members
      • Communicate weekly music information/updates to the front office
      • Communicate with office staff for space reservations
      • Review weekly and seasonal bulletins for accuracy
      • Relational Ministry
        • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all stakeholders, program leaders and volunteers, members of the congregation, Board of Administration, and staff
        • Recruit congregation members to sing in the choir

General Expectations:

  • Attend appropriate meetings as needed to fulfill responsibilities and expectations
  • Communicate weekly work schedule with the Pastor
